How to clear PTE

Clearing PTE means meeting a published cut-off. This is the routine candidates use before a first or second attempt.

Clear is a cut-off, not a button

Candidates say “clear PTE” when they mean the score that releases an offer or a visa step. Pearson does not stamp a paper as cleared. Your letter does. A first attempt fails most often because the candidate booked the wrong product, or booked before enabling tasks were stable.

Four weeks for a 65-style target

Week one is Repeat Sentence and Read Aloud only. Week two adds Write from Dictation and the summary for your paper. Week three adds the essay or the email, plus one section test. Week four is two full mocks on different days, with a review of every missed item the same afternoon. A 79 target needs longer on Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture and essay control.

What to stop doing

Stop collecting templates that do not mention the prompt. Stop sitting a mock every night. Stop treating PTE Home practice as Academic preparation. Stop assuming a forum score map is the university’s map. If the form says UKVI, book PTE Academic UKVI, not a non-SELT Academic slot, when a Secure English Language Test is required.

After a miss

Read the skill scores, not only the overall. A speaking floor miss means microphone work, not more reading passages. A writing floor miss means form: word count, one sentence on Academic summary, email conventions on Core. Then book the next date only when a fresh mock clears the same floor.

First attempt versus second

A first attempt clears more often when the candidate has already survived two full timers, not when they have watched videos. The second attempt should change the weak skill only. Repeating the same week of reading passages after a speaking miss is how candidates pay twice.

Leave at least a fortnight between attempts unless the miss was a single item type you can drill daily. Cramming the night before usually hurts Write from Dictation and Repeat Sentence, which need a clear head.

Section targets

Speaking clears when Read Aloud stays fluent to the end of the text and Repeat Sentence keeps the content words. Writing clears when the summary and the long task hit their word bands without copying the prompt. Reading clears when reorder pairs and fill-in-the-blanks are reviewed, not guessed. Listening clears when dictation is written in full. Pick the section under the floor and give it four days before you mix again.

Paper choice is part of clearing

You cannot clear a Home Office Home test with an Academic score report. You cannot clear a Core request with an essay mock. Read the form aloud and match the product name. Then use a plan of 15 days only if the test is soon and the level is already close. A 60-day plan is the calmer route to a high floor. Clearing is the cut-off, hit on the official report, not a button in practice.

The week you book

In the week of the test, stop adding new templates. Repeat the item types you already miss, sleep, and check the identity document against the booking. A clear is lost on the day by a wrong name on the ID as often as by a hard item. After the report arrives, compare each skill with the floor. Clear means every required number is met on the Pearson file. A strong practice week that you did not sit does not clear anything.

If you missed, change one variable only: the weak skill, the product, or the timing. Changing all three at once makes the second fee a guess.

Use the article, then the timer

Read this once, then sit a timed set the same day. An article that never becomes a microphone attempt will not change a score. Note the cut-off, the product name, and the item type you missed. Return to the matching practice path: Academic or UKVI for the two-hour paper, Core for the email paper, and the short speaking drill only if the form says Home. Keep the Pearson report separate from any practice check. The article explains the choice. The centre test is the only result an institution can verify.
