Why choose PTE over IELTS?
A plain comparison of PTE and IELTS for candidates who can sit either test.
Start with the requirement, not the advert
People search for why to choose PTE over IELTS when a university, an employer or a visa form accepts both. The useful answer is not that PTE is the easy test. It is that the delivery suits some candidates better. PTE Academic is one computer sitting of about two hours. Speaking is into a headset. IELTS Academic, on many bookings, still includes a speaking interview with a person. If your form names only one test, this comparison does not matter. Book the named test.
PTEGRO is independent practice. It does not book a test and it does not issue a score report. Pearson does that after a centre sitting.
Delivery and timing
PTE Academic runs speaking and writing together, then reading, then listening. There is no separate speaking appointment to schedule. Results are often back in about two days, though Pearson’s own timing is the one to trust on booking day. IELTS results are often slower, and computer-delivered IELTS has narrowed that gap in some cities. If a deadline is ten days away, the result window can matter more than the brand.
The PTE score is 10 to 90. IELTS is a band from 0 to 9. A table on the university site maps one to the other. Do not invent the map. A PTE 65 is not “the same thing” as IELTS 6.5 unless that institution says so.
Speaking, typing and integrated marks
Candidates who freeze in an interview sometimes prefer the microphone. Candidates who think better aloud with a person sometimes prefer IELTS. PTE speaking tasks are short and repeated: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Answer Short Question, plus Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation on the current Academic paper. IELTS speaking is a longer conversation with follow-up questions.
PTE also blends skills. A Read Aloud can contribute to speaking and reading. Write from Dictation can contribute to listening and writing. A weak enabling task can move more than one score. IELTS band scores feel more separate. If you are strong at one skill and weak at another, that difference should affect the choice.
When PTE is the practical choice
Choose PTE if the institution lists it, you can type at a steady pace, and you would rather speak to a computer than to an examiner. Choose IELTS if the form asks for an IELTS band only, you write better by hand, or you want a human to ask you to expand an answer. PTE Core is not Academic. It is an everyday-English test, often used on Canadian routes, with Write Email instead of an academic essay. PTE Home A1, A2 and B1 are short speaking and listening tests for some UK routes. None of those is a substitute for the other.
After you choose, practise the paper you will sit. A week of Academic essays will not prepare a Core email, and a Home drill will not prepare a two-hour Academic mock.

Score maps and acceptance
A forum table that says PTE 65 equals IELTS 6.5 is a starting rumour, not an offer. The university international page, the visa guidance, or the employer’s HR note is the map that counts. Some institutions accept both and publish both cut-offs. Some accept PTE Academic but not PTE Core. Some accept IELTS Academic but not IELTS General. Write the exact product name next to the cut-off before you compare difficulty.
Acceptance also moves. A route that took PTE last year may have changed its list. Check the date on the page. If the page is silent, ask the admissions office in writing. A practice site cannot confirm acceptance.
Cost, booking and test day
Fees differ by city. PTE is booked through Pearson, IELTS through its own centres. Both need the identity document you registered. PTE speaking is in the same sitting as the rest of the test, so you do not return on another day for an interview. That single-day shape is a real reason to choose PTE if travel to the centre is expensive. It is not a reason to choose PTE if the form does not list it.
On the day, PTE uses a headset and a timer you cannot pause. Arrive early, and do not rely on a template you have not tried under a clock. IELTS speaking can feel more like a conversation, which helps candidates who organise ideas by talking. Neither format rewards a memorised introduction that ignores the question.
How to practise after you choose
If you choose PTE, drill the paper you booked. Academic and UKVI share the Academic task list. Core does not. Home does not. Spend the first week on Repeat Sentence, Read Aloud and Write from Dictation, then add the long writing task. One timed mock a week is enough to see whether the format still feels like the better fit. If the mock shows that speaking to a microphone is the weak point, IELTS may be the calmer booking, provided the institution accepts it.
